Verizon Wireless and MetroPCS are appealing a court decision regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s mobile broadband regulations, which went into effect in December 2011. Verizon and MetroPCS argue that the FCC has overstepped its mandate with legislation that prevents network operators from managing certain types of network traffic. Verizon and MetroPCS make four main arguments. First, the Telecommunications Act “expressly forbids the FCC from applying common-carrier regulation to broadband Internet access, but the rules do just that.” Second, the FCC lacks statutory authority to implement any such rules. Third, the rules are unconstitutional and violate the First Amendment. Verizon and MetroPCS argue, “Broadband networks are the modern-day microphone by which their owners engage in First Amendment speech.” Last, Verizon and MetroPCS maintain that the rules are “arbitrary and capricious.” The rules were put into effect last year to prevent network operators from selectively controlling apps, services, and other functions that require mobile and wired broadband connections.from Phonescoop
Google Voice Search hits iOS, tackles Siri on her own turf10/31/2012 by Roger M.
Google is not content to try and win mobile search by selling more Android devices, they are now taking the voice search fight right to Siri, announcing today the immediate availability of voice search in the newest version of the Google Search app for iOS. Apple pundits like John Gruber have already praised the speed of Google’s offering relative to Siri, and of course Google knows a thing or two about providing accurate search results.
One thing you won’t get is Siri’s personality, as Google seems committed to the idea of a less personal and more “to the point” voice search. Still, the responses are quite clear and pleasant sounding, and we’ve seen before on the Android version of Voice Search that the results are generally as good as or better than those provided by Apple’s personal assistant. If you want to give it a try hit up the app store link below. To all of you iOS users out there, will this make you consider ditching Siri?from Phone Arena
